About the Accessibility Commissioner

The Accessibility Commissioner is responsible for ensuring that organizations are fulfilling their obligations set out in the Accessible Canada Act and the Accessible Canada Regulations, which set out create a barrier-free Canada by 2040.

The Commissioner handles certain accessibility complaints filed under the Act and engages with rights holders to ensure their voices are heard in the spirit of “nothing without us.”

About the Office of the Accessibility Commissioner

The Office of the Accessibility Commissioner (OAC) is part of the Canadian Human Rights Commission. The OAC supports the Accessibility Commissioner’s work and helps federally regulated organizations understand and meet their obligations under the Act by providing guidance and tools.

Our reponsibilities

The OAC works with regulated organizations as they strive to meet their legal obligations. It keeps inspecting, and if they are not meeting their obligations, it takes appropriate actions.

The OAC encourages people with disabilities to participate in consultations and use feedback processes to inform organizations of the identification, removal and prevention of any accessibility barriers they may encounter.

The OAC engages with people with disabilities on an ongoing basis and listens carefully to what they have to say so that we are aware of the challenges they face. Finally, it bears these experiences and challenges in mind as we do our work.
